Physical Characterization and Geotechnical Properties of Municipal Solid Waste
نویسنده
چکیده
Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) is complex refuse consisting of various materials with different properties. Some of the components are stable while others degrade as a result of biological and chemical processes. Leachate resulting from this is hazardous pollutant to the soil and ground water underlying. Leaching of this leachate and heavy metals into the soil leads to the contamination of both soil and groundwater. Municipal solid waste disposal on land has become one of the challenges in landfill engineering design. The stability of landfill is governed by the strength parameters and physical properties of MSW. For the analysis of MSW, geotechnical properties of the MSW play an important role in designing of the landfill and slope stability issues. In this paper results of laboratory investigation of the geotechnical properties of MSW are presented. Waste samples collected were subjected to specific gravity, moisture content, particle size analysis, compaction, permeability, consolidation and direct shear tests. The influence of these properties on the stability of the landfill and other issues of MSW in the designing of landfill are discussed.

Waste management is a complex and detailed process that involves evaluation of certain important factors, such as a geological, geotechnical, hydrological, hydrogeological, climate, urban management, environmental, along with social, cultural, and psychological parameters. Unfortunately, in Iran, there is minimal evaluation of initial parameters and in some cases even don’t exist. The purpose o...

Determining the seasonal and annual quantities and compositions of the municipal solid waste and assessing the present management conditions of three urban communities in the northwest of Iran were the core objectives of this study. Our findings revealed that the average daily per capita of municipal waste generation was 0.489–0.841 kg/cap-day. Organic and food waste comprised the largest part ...
متن کاملStatus and challenges of municipal solid waste management in India: A review
The abysmal state of and challenges in municipal solid waste management (MSWM) in urban India is the motivation of the present study. Urbanization contributes enhanced municipal solid waste (MSW) generation and unscientific handling of MSW degrades the urban environment and causes health hazards. In this paper, an attempt is made to evaluate the major parameters of MSWM, in addition to a compre...

One of the management practices to reduce the harmful effects of chemical fertilizers and to protect soil and water resources is applying a combination of organic and chemical fertilizers that can better than using them separately. Therefore, in order to understand and identify the effectiveness of this management practice, it is necessary to examine runoff and sediment production. This study w...
متن کاملDevelopment of a MSW classification system for the evaluation of mechanical properties.
To date, sparse information is available on the mechanical properties of municipal solid waste and the results of published work are often hard to compare due to differences in waste composition and therefore properties. To allow comparison, a unified classification system for waste is deemed crucial. Existing classification systems are presented and discussed. For a geotechnical classification...
